For the 100th The Ruhrtriennale Europeras 1 & 2, his largest and most radical music theater work, shows John Cage's birthday. Heiner Goebbels and his team use the opportunity of the open architecture of the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum and put one of the most spectacular opera concepts of the 20th century in the limelight. Since Cage's premiere in Frankfurt am Main in 1987, Europeras 1&2 has never been performed again – with one exception. John Cage's announcement that he would be sending us all operas back with Europeras 1 & 2 promises a dazzling web of arias, sets, costumes, figures and gestures from the fund of European opera history. He left most of the compositional and staging decisions to the I Ching – the Chinese oracle, also known as the Book of Changes.

Concept

I work closely with directors, costume designers, producers and actors/singers/dancers to conceptualize and define the desired look for each character.

My team and I need to be able to apply different make-up and hair techniques on this basis to achieve the desired look.

Organization

I am responsible for the budget and personnel management of the make-up team.

I ensure that resources and budgets are used effectively and monitor the quality and working hours of the team.

I also ensure compliance with the safety and hygiene regulations for the use of make-up artist products.

Personnel

Make-up artists and actors have to harmonize well with each other personally. The right composition of the team inspires the preparation and application of make-up and hair.

MASK DESIGN

From the artistic concept to the final realization, I create masks and mask parts that are perfectly tailored to the respective requirements.

Hair & make-up

I design and realize make-up and hairstyles that emphasize the personality and features of the character and have the best possible effect, especially on stage.

Wig Design

I design and create perfectly coordinated wigs and hairpieces using my extensive knowledge of styles and styles.

Background information on the 2012-2014 season

“Art as experience, theater as reality.” With these words, composer, theater maker and professor of applied theater studies Heiner Goebbels announces the program of the Ruhrtriennale from 2012-2014. Goebbels and his dramaturgy team focus strongly on music and music theater, show a lot of visual art, include museums as venues and give more space to performance.

The 2012 opening is a commitment: radical polyphony and the discipline of chance: Heiner Goebbels’ first directorial work brings John Cage’s almost never performed operas Europeras 1&2 to the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum. Boredoms on the Haniel slag heap = noise. Power. Performance. Folk. by Romeo Castellucci stages the drama of community and the drama of being alone as a baptismal act in a pool in the Gebläsehalle in Duisburg.

The beautiful memory of Soapéra by Mathilde Monnier brings the words “foam” and “time” to mind. Beyond that, it is difficult to describe what happened: theater as an experience. Life and Times 2 by New York’s Nature Theatre Of Oklahoma is theater as a series – episode 2 of 10 is showing at PACT Zollverein in Essen. The 12 Rooms live art parcours attracts a large audience to the Museum Folkwang. The intimacy of the spaces, the radicalism of the presentation, the power of the performers and also the humor of the international artists leave a lasting impression.
