KARL MAY PLAYS

Concept

I work closely with directors, costume designers, producers, and actors/singers/dancers to conceptualize and define the desired look for each character.

Based on this, my team and I must be able to apply various make-up and hair techniques to achieve the desired look.

Organization

I manage the budget and personnel for the make-up artist team.

In doing so, I ensure that resources and budget are used effectively, and I monitor the team’s quality and working hours.

Additionally, I ensure compliance with safety regulations and hygiene for the use of make-up products.

Personnel

Make-up artists and performers must have good personal chemistry. The right team composition enhances the preparation and application of make-up and hair.

MASK DESIGN

From the artistic concept to the final implementation, I create masks and prosthetic pieces, perfectly tailored to the specific requirements.

Hair & Make-up

I design and create make-up and hairstyle concepts that emphasize the character’s personality and features, and achieve the best possible effect, especially on stage.

Wig Design

With extensive knowledge of styles and implementation techniques, I design and create perfectly matched wigs and hairpieces.

When performers
become legends

For over ten years, I have been leading the make-up department at the Karl May Plays at Kalkberg in Bad Segeberg – one of Germany’s largest and most traditional open-air productions.

My passion for live entertainment and open-air theater combines here with the unique challenges of make-up artistry: make-up and wigs that not only credibly shape characters but also endure for over 75 performances – through sun, rain, dust, and amidst intense stage action.

Over the years, I have developed a versatile repertoire of techniques and looks – from the iconic Winnetou braid to weatherproof desert dust make-up, dramatic scars, and historical beard creations. Whether hero, villain, or tribal leader – my goal is always to give each character a distinctive, expressive appearance that supports the story and captivates the audience.

In doing so, I work closely with direction, the costume department, and technical staff to create a visual unity that perfectly conveys the artistic vision of the production. At the same time, I pay attention to comfort, safety, and the highest hygienic standards – because only when performers feel comfortable can they give their best on stage.

I know the specific processes, requirements, and dynamics of the Karl May Plays inside out. My experience and organizational talent make me a reliable point of contact for all make-up related matters – from the start of rehearsals to the final performance.

Even after more than a decade, for me, stagnation is not an option. I regularly pursue further training, observe trends, test new products, and integrate modern techniques to continuously improve the quality and impact of my work – for vibrant, credible characters and an enthusiastic audience.
