A centuries-old family clan is choking on itself. When the eldest son marries a young homeless woman, everyone hopes for happiness and love. But instead old fears and insults are returning, violence is spreading. In the footsteps of the Belgian symbolist Maurice Maeterlinck, the composer Claude Debussy transforms very real experiences of modernity into mysterious, mythologically charged images and scenes …
On August 20, 2017, Warlikowski, Hannigan and de Leeuw will perform “Socrate” in Bochum’s Jahrhunderthalle. The audience will sit in the set of “Pelléas et Mélisande”. A unique opportunity to discover the rarely performed masterpiece of one of the most original composers of the 20th century in a new setting.
I work closely with directors, costume designers, producers, and actors/singers/dancers to conceptualize and define the desired look for each character.
Based on this, my team and I must be able to apply various makeup and hair techniques to achieve the desired look.
I handle the budget and personnel management of the makeup artist team.
In doing so, I ensure that resources and budget are used effectively and I monitor the team’s quality and working hours.
Additionally, I ensure compliance with safety regulations and hygiene standards for the use of makeup products.
Makeup artists and performers must have good personal chemistry. The right team composition enhances the preparation and application of makeup and hair.
From the artistic concept to the final implementation, I create masks and prosthetic pieces, perfectly tailored to the respective requirements.
I design and create makeup and hairstyle designs that emphasize the character’s personality and features and achieve the best possible effect, especially on stage.
With extensive knowledge of styles and implementation methods, I design and create perfectly matched wigs and hairpieces.
“Be embraced!” Johan Simons, Artistic Director of the Ruhr Triennale 2015-2017, and his team call out to the people of the Ruhr region: The festival of the years 2015 to 2017 sets out in search of the divine sparks (of knowledge).
The Dutchman Simons is well-known to the Ruhr Triennale audience. From Sentimenti, his first production at the Ruhr Triennale in 2003, to the “Be embraced” program, a beautiful arc emerges: At the center are humans and their emotions, and the Ruhr region, with which the festival establishes new connections over the coming three years.
It begins with Ritournelle, the long night of electronic pop music. The line-ups of the years 2015-2017 attract new audience groups. With the first music theater evening in 2015, a venue of colossal dimensions is added as a new Ruhr Triennale performance space: In the decommissioned coal mixing hall of the Lohberg mine in Dinslaken, Johan Simons stages Pasolini’s Accattone. The dimensions of the hall make humans appear small and insignificant; comfort is provided by J.S. Bach’s cantatas. The Jahrhunderthalle Bochum is once again the central venue of the festival. The studio of Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout builds an expansive festival center in front of the Jahrhunderthalle and gives it the title The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. In the mixing plant of the Zollverein coking plant in Essen, a radical aesthetic approach to Monteverdi’s opera Orfeo follows: Susanne Kennedy transports visitors into states of expectation and waiting, shock and liberation in seven installation spaces. Those who wanted to see Luigi Nono’s Prometeo in the Power Plant in Duisburg had to walk through dense fog beforehand: To lose orientation? To sensitize the sense of hearing for the tragedy of listening? Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, the great Belgian dancer and choreographer, is a regular at the Ruhr Triennale. The source of her choreographies is always music; in 2015, a text now appears very prominently: The Tale of the Love and Death of Cornet Christoph Rilke.
Johan Simons’ Rheingold in the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum is among the most heavily attended performances of the festival ever. The thesis is: With Rheingold, Wagner tells the story of the Ruhr region.
