The Needcompany is an international collective of idiosyncratic theater makers and performers founded in 1986 by Jan Lauwers and Grace Ellen Barkey and based in Brussels. It was part of Flanders’ avant-garde as early as the early 1980s, which triggered a radical change in the arts. Lauwers’ background as a visual artist strongly shaped his approach to theater and led to a highly individual and in many ways groundbreaking way of expression that explores theater and its meaning.
